The changing nature of engagement rings
In the past, it was a simpler decision in deciding upon a ring for engagement. Nowadays the process has become more complex as more styles, designs and gemstones are offered to the consumer. One was somewhat limited to only a handful of designs, styles and gemstones in earlier times. This was mainly due to the lack of sophisticated equipment we have today. Of course, diamond rings came into fashion in the 14th century, but the jewellers then didn’t know how to maximize the appearance of such a gemstone. Nowadays technology and the machinery involved in the cutting process has developed to such a level that a high degree of precision for engagement rings is achieved. Furthermore a range of cuts, are used in the industry to achieve a dazzling effect.

Also, whilst comparing the past to the present, one can see the difference in attitudes that exist towards such a ring. In the past, the man always has proposed and presented the betrothal gift. However, in many countries today, sometimes the reverse occurs and the woman confesses her love and commitment to marriage. This has become quite a pivotal turning point in human sociology, and can lead to greater contentment on both sides. The woman is happy because she gets to confess her love and physically express it in the form of a gift. The man is content because it relieves some of the pressure off him, as he knows his partner definitely wants to marry, and perhaps his fiancée proposing has somewhat of a novelty factor attached to it as well.
